Fire danger remains high

News Release
MNR

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources forest fire managers are cautioning people to make sure their outdoor fires are extinguished properly. Underlying drought conditions may allow fires to burn into organic material below the snow and flare into fires when warmer spring weather arrives.
From Greenstone in the east and Kenora in the west, the residents of northwestern Ontario are aware of the very low water levels and drought conditions that persist in some parts of the region.
People often set campfires along the shores of lakes in winter for warmth and cooking, or burn off woody debris around their rural homes and cottages. But they might not properly extinguish these fires, relying instead on snow and cold weather to eventually put them out. In People can help prevent winter fires carrying over to spring forest fires by making sure their outdoor winter fires are put dead out before leaving, and by reporting any smouldering fires that they come across while working or pursuing winter recreational activities, to their local MNR fire office.
