By Jenny Moorman
RR Runners Club
The River Runners Canoe and Kayak Club will host their first meeting for the 2007 Paddling Season on Sunday, May 6th at 7:00 PM at the Ken and Jenny Moorman residence. Items for discussion will include a Fun Run, the Thursday night paddles, our Summer Event‚s Calendar, election of officers and access site clean-ups.
The 2007 Summer Event‚s Calendar is currently in a rough draft state, and the group will use their first meeting to firm up dates and trip leaders. Our upcoming trips will feature paddles for all levels of expertise including some overnight camping options along with the fun-filled group day trips. Destinations such as Caliper Lake, Rainy Lake, the Rapid River, the Tamarac River, Haye‚s Lake and Brown‚s Lake were all discussed at the September 2006 meeting.Last year, the River Runners hosted several very successful group trips and at our fall wrap-up the group did an overview of those trips.
Our first group trip was to Blackduck Lake. Gale Friesen was the trip leader and after a delightful paddle around the lake and an island hike, the paddlers were invited to the Friesen residence for a potluck meal. This was a great way to get reacquainted with members and kick off the season!
Tom Heinrich offered the River Runners a wonderful overnight campout at Caliper Lake for our second trip. This trip included lots of paddling at the beautiful Provincial Park. The group had some scenic campsites overlooking the lake and spent their time during the day paddling around the crystal clear waters and their nights eating gourmet camp chow. Everyone enjoyed swimming, fishing, and snorkeling.
Our group‚s signature trip for the season was a campout on Rainy Lake hosted by Mike and Penny Hirst. Even with some rough weather, the group managed to enjoy some fantastic paddling and some great bass fishing! Following the trip, there was even some Perogie sampling involved!
The River Runners Canoe and Kayak Club has over forty members, and everyone is welcome to join the organization. The Moorman residence is located 4 ∏ miles west of Baudette on Highway 11, and then π mile south on County Road 76/ 29th Ave. SW. The Moorman‚s home is the first house south on Cty. Rd. 76, on the west side of the road, and is a redwood house with a circular driveway and a big friendly dog.
