Hansen/Heyens win OFSAA medal
By Donnie Gall
Coach
Hillary Hansen and Chantel Heyens have won an Antique Bronze Medal at the OFSAA Badminton Championships in Waterloo. The 2 girls record at the tournament was 1-4 but it was good enough for 4th place in the C flight to win their medal.
The girls played well throughout the week losing some very close matches. In three of their four losses they went the full three sets only to be on the short end of the stick.
Their results were as follows, Game 1 vs Conlon/Qatipi from Guelph CVI they lost 7-15, 15-13, 3-15
Game 2 vs Cousinaeu/ Meilleur from Jeunesse Nord HS they lost 11-15, 15-12, 1-15
Game 3 vs Pinto/Chiu from Francis Libermann HS they won 15-6, 15-3
Game 4 C semis vs Jeffray/Jones from Goderich DHS they lost 15-12, 6-15, 5-15
Game 5 C 3rd 4th game vs Liyanage/wu from Glenforest HS they lost 13-15, 8-15
As you can see all the games were close and could of went either way. The girls were a lot more in control of things this year as they have been to the OFSAA tourney last year and that experience paid off in this tourney. This is the first OFSAA Badminton award for any Athlete at RRHS and I congratulate you on that feat.
This is the girls last year at RRHS and they have truly played some great badminton over their 4 years here and have showed great sportsmanship on and off the court. I am truly proud of their efforts and am proud to say that I was their coach. I wish you all the success in your futures.
Awesome Accomplishment Girls!!!
Molly Bartlett and Kristin Moen also had a great week at the OFSAA Championships.
They finished the week 1-3 and were one win away from a medal.
Their results are as follows,
Game 1 vs Poon/Wong from
Richmond Hill they lost 7-15, 3-15
Game 2 vs Pinsonneault/ Gagnon from Belle River DHS they lost 8-15, 8-15
Game 3 vs Peng/Xie from Sinclair SS they won 16-17, 15-11, 15-12
Game 4 vs MacDonnell/ Okihiro from Iroquois Ridge HS they lost 17-15, 5-15, 11-15
The girls showed alot of grit and determination on the courts this week and if they were nervous I surely never seen it even though this was their first experience at OFSAA.
I am sure that we will once again see these two girl at OFSAA next year and with all that experience under their belts I expect we will see some more
Medals coming to RRHS. I am very proud of these girls and I wish them all the best next year.
Great Year Girls!!!
Nick Ashworth and Carling Nordin played very well during the week at OFSAA and even though they did not win any of their games they too were only 1 game away from a medal.
Their results are as follows
Game 1 vs Liu/Hui from Earl of March HS they lost 2-15, 2-15
Game 2 vs Giddings/Roth form Preston HS they lost 9-15, 11-15
Game 3 vs Kwok/Gupta from Crescent/Havergal HS they lost 8-15, 8-15
The two should be very proud of their play all year and I would like to offer my congrats to you on an excellent season. This is Carling’s last year and I wish her all the best in her future endeavours. As for Nick he has one year left in school and I am sure we will see him with some more awards and rewards in Badminton wherever that may be.
I would also like to thank all the parents that came to Waterloo with the team. Marilyn Hansen, Kathy Moen, and Mike and Anne Bartlett. We had a great time and I truly enjoyed having you guys there to show support for our team.
I would like to close in saying that without a doubt this has been the best Badminton team that I have ever been associated with and I am truly proud of all the team whether you got a medal this year or not. Your efforts and your sportsmanship throughout the year made me extremely happy and proud. I will always be thankful to RRHS for giving me the oppurtunity to coach you great athletes over the years and I will never forget all the great times we have had.
It truly has been fun ride and I can only hope that the Badminton program will grow and get stronger and we will continue to compete at the high level that we have gotten ourselves to.
RRHS you will never be forgotten!!!
