THUNDER BAY, Ontario, June 8, 2007 —Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, today announced a FedNor investment of more than $314,000 in support of youth, small business and e-health initiatives in the Thunder Bay region (see attached information sheet).
“Today’s funding announcement reflects our government’s commitment to the people of Thunder Bay and surrounding area,” said Mr. Stanton. “I’m especially excited to see this investment in young people, giving six young graduates the opportunity to find full-time jobs in their home communities.”
“Canada’s New Government is committed to helping small business compete in today’s global economy,” said Minister Clement. “Our investment will provide business owners and
entrepreneurs with the tools they need to expand their reach into new markets.”
Of the total investment, $162,311 will enable a number of local employers to hire a post-secondary graduate through FedNor’s Youth Internship Program, which helps young people make the transition from campus to workplace. Host organizations include the Atikokan Economic Development Corporation, Rainy River District Soil and Crop Improvement Association, Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, and Le Club Canadien Français de Thunder Bay CFF Incorporée.
An additional $102,500 will assist the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission in their efforts to help Thunder Bay manufacturers secure sub-contracting work with Alberta companies engaged in the Oil Sands Development Project.
The remaining $50,000 in FedNor funding will be invested in Med-Nexus Inc., to support the development of a software tool to create health-related information that will automatically adapt according to the user’s level of understanding on any given subject.
“Today’s announcement is great news for the people of Thunder Bay, Rainy River and Atikokan regions,” said Lynn Peterson, Mayor of Thunder Bay. “This assistance from FedNor will contribute to the overall economic vitality of Northwestern Ontario as part of a strategy to generate jobs and greater wealth for residents.”
By supporting the residents of Thunder Bay and area through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
