Railroad Daze set to roll back into town July 20th-22nd

It is only two weeks until Railroad Daze Weekend, July 20-22, 2007, and planning is in full swing. There are many activities for people of all ages to enjoy, however, the Recreation Board needs full participation for the events to happen.
Kicking things off will be community picnic on the lawn at the old CNR station. Cake, ice cream and strawberries will be served and Highway 621 will entertain. It is hosted by the Rainy River Seniors Activity Depot.
A slow-pitch baseball tournament planned for the weekend but more teams are needed for the tournament to occur and there are great prizes available to be won.
There will be a canteen and beer gardens available during the weekend while slow-pitch is being played.
A horseshoe tournament on the Saturday and again participants are needed to register in advance so organizers have an estimate of how many players will compete.
Kids games will take place on the Saturday at the Rec. Centre. Young people are encouraged to come out and enjoy the activities put on by the Early Years Resource Program.
Friday night is also a night for the kids as we are planning a kids dance at the rec. center, ages 11-16. Younger kids are welcome to come but they must have an adult accompany them.
The library is hosting a Muggles‚ Family Fun Night on Friday beginning at 10:00 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. This event is a book release party for the newest book of the Harry Potter Collection and there will be fun activities planned for kids of all ages.
The Rec Centre will also host a smear tournament on Friday night beginning around 8:00 p.m. or whenever the baseball games are finished.
The annual Cardboard & Duct Tape Boat Races will be held on Sunday at 1:00 pm, if you would like to register for the race you can do so at the Rec. Centre.
The Rainy River Legion is hosting a steak supper and dance on Saturday night.
Rainy River Music Festival will also be held that weekend. Saturday there will be a variety show from 4-7 p.m. Sunday there will be an interdenominational church service in the Park at 10:30 a.m. with the Music Fest taking place from Noon to 4 p.m.
The weekend will end with fireworks at Hannam Park.
Activities are subject to change if not enough interest is shown for them to happen. So if you would like more information or to register for any of the previously mentioned activities or if you would like to volunteer for the weekend please contact Summer Rec. Director Travis Vandenbrand at 852-4446.
Vandenbrand is also starting a Kids’ baseball program to run Monday nights. It is open to ages 6-16 and costs $5. Call him to register. It begins next Monday at 7 p.m. at the RR ball diamonds.
