Another attraction during RailRoad Daze in Rainy River this year, will be the Rainy River Fun Fly. Held annually, this year on Saturday, July 21 starting at 10:30 a.m., the Fun Fly is hosted by the Rainy River Radio Control Flying Club at their airfield one mile north of Rainy River on Byrnes Road.
“We are expecting around fifty pilots, many with multiple aircraft, again this year, including the Skyhawks from Mankato, Minnesota” says Bill Hagarty, Club president.
Last year’s meet was about the same size with near 100 model aircraft taking wing. Everything from very modest starter kits to replica scale model Spitfires lifted from the grass runway displaying the flying prowess and dedicated enthusiasm of their owners.
The Skyhawks, for example, put on professional displays at many air shows and have flown model aircraft for the movie industry, including the Japanese attack planes in Tora! Tora! Tora!, the Pearl Harbour classic. In Rainy River, they fly just for the joy of it and put on some amazing aerobatic displays.
Building and flying radio-controlled aircraft is a fascinating hobby open to all. It can involve a very modest starter kit, or can include the dozens of handcrafted birds that grace workshops like Hagarty’s. Young and old, it is a craft open to all.
Spectators are welcome to attend the Fun Fly, all day Saturday. What an opportunity to see some of the very best of radio-controlled aircraft. Admission is free
