“Arrrrgh! There be pirates in Rainy River, Matey”. At least there were at the RR Public Library as Penny Shumaker kicked off the Summer Reading Program with a presentation of Grandma and the Pirates by Phoebe Gilman.
This program sponsored by TD Bank and the Ontario Public Libraries hosts a once a week program for kids from Kindergarten through Grades 3 to encourage literacy. The theme of this year’s program is Lost Worlds.
Offered at the Library in Rainy River, the program at 11:00 a.m. for seven weeks is timed to coincide with another program at the Toy Library. This allows parents to leave older kids at the Library while attending with younger siblings at the Toy Library.
The seven eager participants in last Tuesday’s event actively participated in the reading with questions and observations and then each made their own pirate flag before heading home to lunch.
Subjects for the next six weeks include Owls, July 18; Pyramids and Mummies, July 25; Dinosaurs, Aug 1; Ancient Greece, Aug 8; Vikings and Shields, Aug 15; and Adventure Day, Aug 22.
This free admission program is open to all Kindergarten through Grade 3 children, but to insure adequate staffing and supplies, parents are urged to pre-register their kids by phoning the RR Public Library at 852-3375.
