Laura May Almers

In loving memory of Laura May Almers, age 80 years, a longtime resident of Rainy River, ON who passed away at LaVerendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, ON, on Monday, April 1, 2002.
Laura was born on February 1, 1922 in Rainy River, ON to John and Hazel Fadden. She grew up in the Rainy River area and taught school at the Morson Public School in 1942. During the war she worked in Toronto in an ammunition factory making shells. She returned to the Rainy River area in 1950. She began work at Arctic Sport Products as an office manager in 1968. She was united in marriage to Jack Race in 1954 and he passed away in 1971. On August 29, 1972 she was united in marriage to William (Willie) Almers. Laura spent many years as Hostess/Cook on board the Ark. Laura loved to work on ceramics and enjoyed teaching it to others. She was a member of the Eastern Star and St. James Anglican Church. Laura loved to spend time with her family and friends and always looked forward to their gatherings. She loved flowers, bird watching, fishing and shore lunches.
She was predeceased by her first husband Jack Race in 1971, her brother-in-law David Bolen on May 21, 1998, her sister Louise Johnson on October 15, 2001 and her mother-in-law Nora Almers.
She is survived by her husband Willie, sisters, Marjorie Bolen and Gladys (Emil) Peloquin; brother Gerald & (Judy) Fadden; brother-in-laws John Almers, Almar (Lorraine) Almers, and Don Johnson; sister-in-law Elizabeth Blight and their families.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Rainy River, ON. Father Wayne Macintosh will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River, ON.
The pallbearers will be Jim Miller, William Penney, Terry Hyatt, Morley Bolen, Dwayne Bolen, and David Blight.
The honorary pallbearers will be Cindy Miller, Gordon and Buddy Hannam, Herb and Evelyn Nelson, Jean and John Maki, Ellen and Daryl Gaudry, Vivian and Bob Locking, Betty Blight, Elizabeth Blight, Brian and Linda Almers, Ben and Star Clarke, Joan Ryan, Al and Lorraine Almers and Charlotte (DeeDee) Mallory.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 920 Frenette Avenue, Fort Frances, Ontario, P9A 3N4
