There was plenty of “Fun” for everyone at the Fourth Annual Bergland Family Fun Day this past Sunday.
The day began with kids activities that included games, a visit from Sparkie the Fire Dog, face painting, water-balloon tosses, etc.
A major focus for the annual event besides having “Fun” is to raise money for cancer research. Several activities including Cuts for Cancer, a Dunk Tank, a Balloon Release, A 4.5 mile Walk, Run or Ride for the Cure, a free will supper/chili cook off raised nearly $3,100 Sunday.
Three people had their heads shaved for the cause in Cuts for Cancer. New Bergland resident Sharon Parsons was up first and she raised $807. Rob Gate raised $311 and Pauline Brusven raised a little over $200.
The Dunk Tank raised $45, but was later turned into a fun activity free of charge for the kids, some of which took turns being the dunkee and others being the dunkers.
A balloon release saw $206.50 donated with balloons being released in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
The Walk, Run or Ride for Cancer event had five participants. Emma and Larrissa Michner, Adrienne McLean, Janet Fisk and Jim Howard. Together they raised $606.07.
Throughout the afternoon local entertainers, the band Highway 621, who like the actual highway were under construction, played and sang for the audience. The main band members, Fred Brett, Gerry Fisk and Leonard Larson, saw some new additions in Bill Olson singing and Bill Eliuk of Sioux Narrows join them in entertaining the crowd.
At the end of the day there were nine entrants in the annual Chili Cookoff, sponsored by the Lake of the Woods Women’s Institute. After judges George Pratt, Reeve Val Pizey and Marion Huddock tantalized their taste buds there was a tie. In a tie-breaker taste they all decided that pot number two was the winner. That pot belonged to Sharon Parsons who was presented with an apron and title of Chili Champ for the next year. After the contest was over the crowd was treated to a free will donation supper of chili, hotdogs and potluck salads. The supper raised $741.50 all of which was donated to the Cancer Society.
