SUDBURY – The McGuinty government is investing in the expansion of a Kenora plant to include a wood pellets manufacturing facility, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.
“Our government is committed to boosting the northern economy and supporting job creation in the private sector,” said Bartolucci, who chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). “As the only major manufacturer of wood pellets in Northwestern Ontario, this company is responding to product demand and will be well positioned for future growth.”
The NOHFC is providing $1,200 to North Winds Energy to support the development costs of manufacturing wood pellets in Kenora. The plant will use wood waste such as sawdust and planer shavings to manufacture wood pellets for the biomass energy heating sector.
“The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is dedicated to working closely with employers to create meaningful job opportunities for northerners across the North,” said Bartolucci. “This project has the potential to generate significant job creation opportunities in the Kenora region.”
This is just one more example of how, working together, Ontarians have achieved results in Northwestern Ontario. Other examples include:
• Investing more than $2.8 million to expand broadband and cellular services for First Nation communities in the Far North
• Providing $2 million toward a streetscaping project in Kenora to complement municipal infrastructure upgrades planned for the waterfront
•Contributing $475,800 for improvements to Mount Evergreen Ski Club and multi-purpose outdoor trails in the Kenora area.
These initiatives are part of the government’s Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities. It has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities;
