Nestor Falls business gets prov. funding to go solar
News Release
MNDM
SUDBURY – The McGuinty government is supporting the Northwestern Ontario tourism sector by helping a fly-in camp operator convert to solar power technology, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci announced today.
“Our funding is helping many remote tourist operations reduce their dependency on fossil fuels,” said Bartolucci. “In doing so, we benefit the environment while helping outfitters operate more economically.”
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing $86,000 to Nestor Falls Fly-in Outposts Limited to purchase and install solar energy systems at 11 outpost camps. The outpost camps are located some 320 kilometres north of a base camp in Nestor Falls. The lodge will reduce its dependency on propane by using the systems to power water, lighting, heat and other amenities. Funding is provided through the NOHFC’s Small Business Energy Conservation Program.
“We are pleased to be supporting northern businesses that are making the transition to environmentally sound energy consumption,” said Bartolucci, who also chairs the NOHFC.
“Energy conservation is a priority of our government and by converting our homes and businesses to more economical energy sources we are advancing our province’s energy plan.”
This is just one more example of how, working together, Ontarians have achieved results in the
North. Other examples include:
• Investing over $34 million to date through the NOHFC in water system upgrades to
ensure quality drinking water across Northern Ontario
• Providing more than $760,000 through the Ministry of Tourism and $375,000 through the
NOHFC to support marketing initiatives in the second year of the Strategic Tourism
Development and Marketing Partnership for Northern Ontario
• Investing $1.8 billion over the next five years in upgrades and expansion of northern
highways.
Today’s initiative is part of the government’s Northern Prosperity Plan. It has four pillars:
Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better;
Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
