Early to Breast, Early to Thrive is the theme for World Breast Feeding Week (Oct. 1-7, 2007) and the Rainy River Northwestern Health Unit held a photo contest to promote that theme.
Grandparent Debbie Armstrong of Rainy River entered her newborn grandson’s photo.
Jackson Henry Armstrong’s photo is on display along with information about breast feeding and its benefits at the Rainy River Toy Library.
Along with the display there will be a free draw for a Medula Manual Breast Pump on Oct. 8th.
Deb and Jackson were presented with a nice picture frame and a plaque.
In a media release the NWHU said:
“All babies should have skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and the opportunity to breast feed. This is when the baby’s sucking reflex is strongest. Breast feeding in the first days after birth produces milk called, colostrum, which is sometimes called “liquid gold.” This milk is rich in nutrients and antibodies serving as protection against some illnesses. It cannot be artificially reproduced. Its life giving properties are what makes initiating breast feeding in the first hour after birth so critical.”
