BRAMPTON — Forty-two students whose work at provincial parks showed initiative, leadership and commitment to customer service are receiving educational bursaries funded by corporate partners of Ontario Parks.
Locally, Jason Seguin of Rainy River, received one of the bursaries after working at Rushing River Provincial Park near Kenora. He attends the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
“Young people play a vital role in our provincial parks system,” said Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield. “The students receiving the awards have shown outstanding dedication and a high level of service to parks visitors. I’m very pleased to be able to recognize their efforts through this partnership bursary program, and to thank our corporate partners who have supported the program over the past eight years.”
The bursary program, which is entirely funded by corporate partners, provides each student with a grant of $500 towards post-secondary education. Twelve of the 42 Ontario Parks summer students who received bursaries attended the awards ceremony today at the head office of Coleman Canada in Brampton.
“By rewarding these young people for their superior performance and encouraging them to pursue higher education, the bursary program is helping them build satisfying careers and lives,” said Government and Consumer Services Minister Ted McMeekin.
“Coleman Canada is very proud to be part of this bursary program,” said Coleman Canada Vice President and General Manager Ezio Sbrizzie. “The enthusiasm these students bring to their roles in Ontario Parks is infectious. Their dedication helps create great outdoor experiences for park visitors.”
“The students working at provincial parks make a big contribution to parks operations through their energy and positive attitude,” said Pentax Canada Marketing Coordinator Christine Otani. “Our company is very pleased to be able to encourage these students through the Ontario Parks Partners Bursary program.”
The Ontario Parks Partners Bursary Program is open to students working in Ontario Parks or a “Friends of” organization. Candidates may be nominated by co-workers, the public or a supervisor. Nominees are judged on their customer service, initiative, leadership, public recognition, overall dedication and promotion of the provincial parks system.
