Mayor Ewald looks back and ahead

Dear Citizens of RR,
As we begin 2008, I would like to reflect on the many accomplishments the Town of Rainy River has experienced over 2007.
The implementation of the Strategic Plan for Rainy River has produced an updated website, development of a new town brochure, and work on an economic development package for expansion and retention for the community. Economic Development committee has worked hard to try and get industry, in the community. Committees have also worked hard to beautify the town and make it an inviting place to visit and live. A Welcome Wagon committee was established to welcome new citizens to the community. A Neighbourhood Watch program has also been developed.
A big bouquet of thanks is extended to the people who give their time and energies on these various committees. It is heartening to see the plan being implemented and accomplishments, however small, being made. Also, through a grant we were able to hire a Town Events Coordinator, Mr. Anthony Mason. He will work with and promote different community events such as the Walleye Tournament, Pumpkin Festival and Railroad Daze to name a few. He will also work on economic development for the Town.
The Town Council began a process that saw the development of a plan to prioritize all aspects of the Town’s responsibilities. Consultations with various departments have produced a 2-5-10 year plan for equipment replacement, additions, etc. This planning will hopefully make us more proactive rather than reactive when situations arise. Through this planning, the Town will plan and budget for each year which will see the town progress and tax dollars spent wisely.
In 2007 the Town purchased a snow plow and a new half-ton truck to help facilitate the work of the outside crew. We also received the long sought after funding for the sewer project which will be completed in 2008. This project will lift the ban on new construction and allow the town to move forward with development.
Council also made the tough decision to close Little Street crossing. The end result will be safety arms and better traffic control. We are working to make the end result as pleasing as possible for the citizens who live in the north area of our town.
In response to an identified need, we hired a dogcatcher. With recent events, it seems that a tougher approach and penalties will need to be looked at. I encourage all dog owners to have complete control and care of their animals at all times.
2007 brought about a revitalized Recreation Board. A new Director was hired, but unfortunately has since left the position. Even so, the Recreation Board is working hard to revamp its programs and keep the facility viable.
In December, Rainy River became the first Northwestern Ontario Chapter of KidSport. The FunZone kick-off was well attended and this program has already seen area children able to participate in local recreation activities.
Recycling is starting in Rainy River in January. A drop off site at the east side of the Town Garage has been set-up. Everyone is encouraged to do their part to recycle.
These are just a few of the highlights of a busy 2007. In closing, I would like to personally thank my fellow Council members, both the inside and outside staff of the Town, and all those who have taken part on the various committees working to improve our community. As a Council we are looking forward to an exciting 2008.
Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” If we as Council and citizens can stay the course, Rainy River will prosper!!!
