Riverview commemorates 10th Family Literacy Day
News Release
Riverview School
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Family Literacy Day in Canada staff and students of Riverview School hosted a celebration of their own on Monday, January 28, 2008. We welcomed a number of community readers who shared their favourite titles and their love of reading with our students. A thank-you is extended to the following guest readers who successfully engaged our students in quality literature; Hal Wilhite, Rebecca Tolen, Deb Wagner, Maureen Ricard, Deb Ewald, Lisa Shumaker, Dianne Debenedet and Glen Carradice. Mrs. Tetu hosted a Scholastic Book Fair which was open throughout the day offering a pleasing assortment of both fiction and non-fictional titles. Midday we invited our families to join us for ‘Lunch with an Author.’ As the author, each student shared their current writings with a member of their family, while enjoying a hot bowl of soup and a bun. The hot meal really hit the spot on such a cold, January day! A bouquet of thanks is extended to our Parent Council for organizing and serving the meal to all our student body and guests. Our volunteers included; Dianne McCormack, Carla Westover, Tara Boucha and Melanie Trenchard. Thanks also to those parents who volunteered their ear to students whose parents were regrettably unable to attend. This ensured that each student had a captive audience. The day was completed by divisional activities in the afternoon. Miss Bodnar led the primary students with spirited song and interactive instrumentation. The junior students participated in Reader’s Theatre facilitated by Mr. Ed Cain while the grade seven and eight students were challenged in a Quiddler tournament. Special thanks to Mrs. Ada Hershberger who offered her expertise during the tournament. Our Family Literacy Day ended with the drawing of a number of prizes donated by Riverview School. Our final thank-you is extended to the moms, dads and other family members who joined our festivities and made our celebration of literacy a memorable event!
