THUNDER BAY – Cattle producers in Northwestern Ontario will benefit from technology improvements at the Stratton Sales Barn.
The Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association will receive $23,450 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to buy and install electronic identification equipment for its sales facility in the Township of Morley. This identification technology helps keep track of cattle to validate food safety and quality, and is increasingly required in domestic and international livestock markets.
“Northern Ontario has a vibrant beef industry that is larger than that of any Atlantic province,” said Northern Development and Mines Minister and NOHFC Chair Michael Gravelle. “I am pleased that our government is helping livestock producers in the Rainy River area remain competitive.”
The investment announced today is in addition to an NOHFC contribution of $74,000 announced in July 2007, which was used to upgrade the cattle sales building and site.
NOHFC initiatives are part of the government’s Northern Prosperity Plan for building stronger northern communities.
