God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding - Written by the women of Guyana
The Cooperative Republic of Guyana is located on the northern coast of South America; it is the only English-speaking country on the continent. “Guyana”, an Amerindian word which means “Land of Many Waters” is home tot he highest single-drop waterfall in the world, Kaieteur Falls, nearly five times as high as the Niagara Falls.
Poverty is one of the major issues affecting a significant proportion of the Guyanese population. Floods in 2005 and 2006 had a devastating impact on numerous communities in the costal areas. Since the 1960’s there has been a steady migration to other countries resulting in a decreasing population.
There is a growing concern about the steady increase in the proportion of women infected by HIV/AIDS in Guyana. There is a strong link between violence against women and HIV/AIDS. Domestic violence remains at an alarming level and trafficking inn persons has also been linked with this issue. Government, church, faith-based communities, civic and non-governmental organizations are working to improve social conditions.
