Rainy River Curling Club held its Junior Curlers’ wind-up bonspiel this past Sunday with 48 kids and parents/grandparents participating.
After all day of curling four end games it was Taylor Armstrong’s rink of Grandpa Don Jarvis, Chalina Abraham and Danielle Abraham facing Kira Olson, Deb Armstrong, Janet Wolanicki and Kyle Olson in the “A” event final. Armstrong’s rink ended up coming out on top.
In the “B” event final it was Skylar Arpin, Jenna Jarvis, Haley Arpin and Guy Arpin winning over Skyler Ivall, Donna Ivall, Sheri McQuaker and Aubree McQuaker.
In the “C” event it was the Ayla Holmes rink of Bethany Sinninghe, John Sinninghe and Sparkie Holmes defeating Nolan Drennan, Reese Marchuk, Shona Larocque and Cory Larocque.
Junior Curling Head Coach Deb Armstrong said the day was a huge success as was the season. “We had 35 curlers in the program this year and everyone had a really good time.”
Junior curling was held every Monday evening at the Rainy River Curling Club. Kids learned basic to advanced curling skills such as proper delivery of rocks, sweeping techniques and how to throw the right turns. Armstrong was very pleased with the development of the Lil’ Rockers as they are affectionately called.
On Sunday their skills shone through as they showed their parents and grandparents how it is done!
With the bonspiel over the kids and adults all gathered in the club room afterwards for a potluck dinner. Awards for winning the bonspiel were then given out and then every Junior Curler received a commemorative t-shirt for a job well done over the season.
The winner of the RR Junior Curler 50/50 draw was Savannah O’Connell. She won $441.50 and the Jr. Curling program will have that much in the bank for its expenses.
“It was a really great day and a really fun season,” said Armstrong Sunday.
