MNR issues public reminders about fish shacks and dogs running deer

From MNR
The Ontario government is reminding ice anglers and others using the lakes in and around the Dryden and Fort Frances areas to remove their ice huts and help keep the lake environment clean and safe.
·Ice hut owners are responsible for maintaining their huts and removing them prior to the spring thaw.
·Owners who abandon their ice huts or store them on Crown land, islands, shore lands or access points are in violation of the Public Lands Act.
·Owners may be fined and could be liable for removal costs.
· Anglers and recreational users are also reminded to clean up and take away their garbage.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds dog owners that it is illegal and dangerous to allow dogs to run loose and chase deer during the non-hunting season.
It’s very difficult for deer to run in deep snow or on ice and being chased by a dog can cause injury, stress, exhaustion and even death. There is also the danger that deer being chased may run across roads and cause traffic accidents.
Dog owners are urged to keep their dogs leashed or in enclosures to ensure the safety of both dogs and deer. Under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, it is illegal to let a dog run at large in an area inhabited by deer, moose, elk and bear during the closed season. The ministry’s conservation officers are authorized to destroy dogs found chasing deer, and dog owners may be charged under this legislation.
The public can report incidents of dogs chasing deer to their local ministry office.
