Spring pie social and quilting display planned for April 12th
By Susan Douglas
Ev. Cov. Church
On, Saturday Apr. 12th, the Rainy River Canadian Legion will once again be bursting with spring colours as the Evangelical Covenant Church host their 3rd annual Spring Pie Social. Decorating the tables will be a collection of flowered teapots & ivy, while enhancing the perimeter a variety of lovely quilts, wall hangings, table runners, tablecloths and baby quilts, will be on display by local craftswomen.
Last year the event drew over ninety people eager to get out and enjoy the spring weather, while viewing the fantastic talents of our local Quilters. When I did the calling this year, our event is a week earlier and the ladies are rapidly finishing up their new quilts. Favourites are sure to be those by our new exhibitor, Marg Westover. Marg is not new to quilting by any means, and is well known throughout the district for putting the finishing touches on many quilts. Marg hopes complete her new quilt entitled “Irish Chain” to exhibit along with the “Bargello” pattern, sure to be a showstopper.
Last year our new exhibitor was Bev Langner with her northern quilt, “Postcards from Pine Tree Lodge” which amused everyone with it’s ticks and mosquitoes. This year Bev will add two new quilts, “ Spring Flowers”, and “Swirls”; along with her popular “Evening Stroll”, and “Mosaic”, one of my favourites, in it’s sparkly material. Another new quilt will be exhibited by Janice Schaaf entitled “Basket Weave”, as well as a variety of items.
Last year beloved quilts were, the “Bargello” pattern by Joyce Penner and Eleanor Wiersema, in purples, pinks and blues. The gorgeous “Dresden Plate” quilt by Tina Mast drew rave reviews alongside the dramatic, yet subtle, “Radiant Star” by Janice Schaaf and these will once again be displayed in case you missed them!
Carol Jensen’s “Flowerpot” quilt is absolutely adorable , with little puffy gatherings of material for flowers. Carol will display the ever-popular “Double Ring” representation, often given as a wedding gift, and will do so again. Elsie Ewald has given many quilts over the years as gifts, and this year she’ll show her Snowball and Stack & Whack with truly vivid colours, both delightful and not to be missed. Elsie will also show a variety of baby quilts. Eleanor’s “Watercolour,” a beauty on it’s own and “The Log Cabin” pattern provided by Eleanor and first timer, Verna Barsy, will demonstrate a bit of traditional flavour. The spectacular Birdhouse pattern by Joyce Penner is a delight to the younger crowd as well as those who love the colour blue.
Even those who have never attempted a quilt can appreciate the fine workmanship that goes into every piece of artwork. We truly have many talented women in this community to learn from. The ladies presently quilt on Mondays (9:00 a.m.) at the Senior’s Depot and any new comers are welcome. There will be a bake table & canning, pie auction, and everyone has a chance at the Door Prize.
Of course all this just adds to the social activity over an array of delicious pies and refreshments!
