Over 100 people attended this year’s 3rd annual Quilt Show & Pie Social, Saturday Apr. 21st, at the Rainy River Canadian Legion. The event sponsored by the Evangelical Covenant Church ladies, filled quickly, with guests eager to view the latest additions to the quilt displays. Our youngest exhibitor, Chalina Abraham, just 8 yrs. Old joined newcomers this year; Margaret McKenzie, Marg Westover, Donna Jewett & Marjorie Haw as they showed their latest quilts . Thirty large patchwork items of every style and pattern lined the walls creating a vivid colourful back drop for the tea. Tables and quilt racks also displayed endearing baby quilts by Elsie Ewald, lively table runners and precious walls hangings by Eleanor and Dorothy Wiersema, and a variety of adorable nurses bags created by Joyce Penner. Marg Westover also showed her washed hand woven wool mittens, a unique exhibit. Bev Langner’s creations brought oohs and aahs as ladies commented on the fine craftsmanship of her designs. Bev revealed two gorgeous additions, one of which she had done by hand, along with one of my favourites from last year, “Postcards from Pine Tree Lodge”, with it’s ticks and mosquitoes. Lined up along one wall were three vibrant quilts of the same pattern, “Bargello,” yet completed by three different artisans in three varying colours.
Carol Jensen, Elsie Ewald, Jeanette Armstrong and Janice Schaaf displayed their delicate workmanship, a result of Mondays spent at the Senior’s Depot quilting. Elsie is in the process of completing another “Snowball” quilt and allowed us to display it as is. Those of us who have never attempted a quilt can appreciate the fine expertise that goes into each piece of artwork. Tina Mast brought her amusing scrapbooks along with her delightful quilted creations.
Corrie Wiersema, the auctioneer, brought in top prices for special pies cooked up by Enid Peters, Mark Douglas and Sheila McIntosh. The bake table was also bursting with tempting delights by the ECC ladies and quickly sold out.
A hand quilted table cloth by Janice Schaaf and church cookbook were the Door Prize won by Lena Beukhart, a nice birthday gift for Lena. Ladies presently quilt on Mondays (9:00 a.m.) at the Senior’s Depot and any new comers are welcome. Thanks to all the ladies for sharing your talents with the public; we look forward to next year’s ever bigger and better show, if that’s possible!
