Allan McGreevy, formerly of Rainy River, received the Duke of Edinburgh's Award from Prince Edward himself on June 3, 2008 in Winnipeg.
The Prince was visiting Canada and made the presentations of the award in person.
The award was created in 1963 and is open to youth between the ages of 14 and 25. It was founded on the premise the young people growing up today face many personal difficulties for personal achievement.
It required McGreevy to set personal goals and achieve them in no less than 18 months.
In Service he was president of the Sexual Health Resource Centre in Kingston, worked with Winnipeg Harvest and Super Spike in Winnipeg.
His four day Adventurous service involved hiking 80 km in Bird's Hill Park in Manitoba.
In Skills he learned to cook.
In a Residential Project he attended Sunny Cove Camp and worked with kids on Canoeing.
In Physical Fitness he lifts weights, swims, runs, cycles and rows.
McGreevy was one of 81 to receive the award in Winnipeg. He is currently working on his Masters at U of M in Medical Microbiology.
