Boshcoff calls on Tories to fully disclose cuts to CFIA
News Release
Ken Boshcoff, M.P.
OTTAWA - Ken Boshcoff M.P. (Liberal, Thunder Bay-Rainy River) today demanded Conservative Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz release the secret document containing the proposed cuts to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
“Why not just release the document to clear the air?” asked Boshcoff. The proposed cuts would reduce preparedness for such disasters as a BSE or Avian Flu crisis.
“The role of government is to protect the public and we must be able to reassure the public that their safety will continue to be a government priority,” stated Boshcoff.
Boshcoff has been in Ottawa for two days of meetings as a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture.
“Our farmers who follow the rules want imported products to be as strictly enforced as ours,” confirmed Boshcoff. “This government is making irresponsible cuts and is not being open and transparent with Canadians.”
Boshcoff is concerned that the cuts will jeopardize public safety, jeopardize markets, and may further reduce inspections of imported products.
Minister Gerry Ritz has yet to release the Report produced in November of 2007.
“Allowing international corporations to self-inspect their food products is a big step backwards - we need CFIA inspectors to play a role to ensure optimal safety of food products,” emphasized Boshcoff.
