On Wednesday, January 28, Our Lady of the Way School successfully held their second Literacy Night of the year.
Family and friends were invited to come to the school from 6:30-7:30 to participate in Literacy based activities such as Reading Buddies, Interactive Smart Board activities, Mixed Up Stories, Art and Authors and Guess Who, with a Robert Munsch theme running throughout.
Staff of Our Lady of the Way, and their guest Joanne Querel, from The Northwest Catholic District School Board’s School Effectiveness Team, were all dressed as characters from Robert Munsch books as were many of the students who attended.
Participants rotated through four stations throughout the hour. Included in the hour was a “Literacy Quilt” station, where participants were asked to decorate keeping in mind the question “What does Literacy mean to you?”. The quilt will be put together and then permanently displayed in the hallway of the school.
At the conclusion of the night, five names were drawn from the student participation bin and these students choose a book to take home. Mr. Brendan Hyatt, Principal concluded the evening singing his song titled “Literacy Day Song”, which has been shared and appreciated with Robert Munsch himself. Students were encouraged to write down the titles of the books that are mentioned in the song. Two students, Cole Tymkin and Jordan Desserre won a lunch out with Mr. Hyatt for recognizing all of the titles. Congratulations boys!
Our Lady of the Way School is also in the midst of their second Reading contest, titled “A Blizzard of Good Books”. Classrooms are competing with each other for this term’ prize, milkshakes for the whole class that wins.
The entire school will also participate in a Pajama Day Reading Buddy afternoon, on Thursday, February 12. Books will be read for the Scholastic Classrooms Care reading effort, to help make literacy donations to libraries for kids in need.
