Do you like to ice fish? Do you like to win prizes? Well then mark this Saturday on your calendar as it is the 12th Annual Morson Ice Fishing Derby.
The day begins at 7 a.m. with a hearty pancake breakfast at the Morson Hall. Anglers can also register for the tournament there at that time.
If you can’t make the breakfast you can register on the ice when fishing begins at 9 a.m. This year access to Lake of the Woods will be at Gill’s Marina where a road has been plowed out to the usual site of the derby.
The entry into the derby is $10 and there are cash prizes for the top three walleye and northern pike weighed in. The derby is a live release derby so to qualify for a prize the fish has to swim off after being weighed.
There are also prizes for the most perch caught and a mystery weight.
One of the event organizers, Sheila Gate, is optomistic that this year’s tournament will be a success again this year. “All the money raised from the event is put back into youth activities at area schools. We also use it to pay for the kid’s fishing derby at the Morson Bass International and the Easter Egg Hunt.”
Food for both humans and fish will be available on the ice Saturday. “Our famous burger booth will be running and live bait will be available.”
Gate said they are also having hourly draws for door prizes. There are also raffles going on including one for a right handed set of men’s golf clubs. Draws for those raffles will take place back at Morson Hall at 6 p.m. once the prize presentations are done. There will also be a roast pork dinner at the hall Saturday evening.
Fishing will go all day, ending at 4 p.m. All are welcome to participate and have a good time.
