Eight members of Lake of the Woods Women's Institute answered roll call with a plants, slips and bulbs exchange.
Reports: 1. The Thinking of You Committee reported on the cards sent out and the visits made.
2. The Museum has renovated the 3 buildings all with volunteer labour. Along with Chapple Museum, they hosted the Sunset Country Museums Network Spring meeting. Contact WI members for tickets on the $1000.00 Cloverleaf shopping spree to be drawn June 19th. Recipes for a Heritage Cook Book are being collected - recipes from old and new WI members; handed down family recipes and recipes from pioneer community members. Contact Ruth Brett with recipes. Children’s programs are again being planned for this summer. The museum has applied for an Intern to work for 1 year. With the funds from the Dance Fire Memorial Grant, the Museum plans on publishing a small history book. Marjorie Meek is binding the quilt which was made and donated by Winnie Rousseau. Thank you, ladies.
3. The R.R. District Annual meeting was held on May 2nd with 12 members attending. It was short, interesting and enjoyable with good results from the sales table and raffle.
4. Our Branch “Spring Tea” held in April at the Bergland hall was fairly well attended with the ladies (and gents) enjoying a very good lunch and excellent program on Alzheimer’s Disease presented by Jolene Morrisseau. Our display featured quilts of all kinds brought by those who attended. Carolyn Kreger presented an interesting take on “Quilts - part of our heritage for hundreds of years”...”made up of squares of different fabrics... like the patches in the quilt of life”, which include personal safety, mental, emotional, physical, family, recreational, spiritual and nutritional health. We will try to address each of these aspects at our upcoming “Teas.”
The Swedish weaving and Scrap Booking/Card making sessions planned for this spring will be put forward to the fall.
The Good Citizenship Award for a well deserving Grade 8 student from McCrosson-Tovell School will be presented again this year in June.
Our Annual “Pie Sale” will be held at the school in Bergland on June 27th starting at 9am.
The Northwestern Ontario Area WI Convention will be held in Rainy River this October 2nd and 3rd. This encompasses all the WI Branches from Thunder Bay westward. We are hoping for a good number of local members attending.
We plan on filling the flower beds at the Cemetery again this spring, if and when Mother
Nature cooperates.
We will once again host the Chili Cook-off at the Bergland Family Fun Days on August 9th.
After adjournment of our meeting, a tasty lunch and a good visit was enjoyed. Karen Sepers won the door prize.
Our membership is looking forward to “a ladies night out” for our June Meeting.
