Laura Armistead joins Rainy River High School’s teaching staff after ten years at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The name Armistead is not new to the area and neither is Laura. Her father-in-law was the late Reverend Earle Armistead and her sister-in-law is the Record’s very own Anne (nee Armistead) Mailloux.
Laura’s husband Gregg, worked for more than two decades at a psychiatric institution and decided it was time for a break. So the couple chose to come to the Rainy River and Morson area and live for at least a year. While Laura will be busy teaching Math, English, Drama and Careers at RRHS, Gregg will be busy working on his families’ home in Minnihico, which used to be Rev. Earle and wife Joyce’s home.
While Laura will not be working on any drama productions outside of class, she does have plans to start a local writer’s circle. Students, staff and members of the community are welcome. Call her at RRHS for meeting times.
“I am an English teacher. That is my passion!” said Laura who just finished teaching grades 7-9 for five years.
She is finding the classes to be great so far noting, “It is very welcoming and different (from Winnipeg) in that everyone is related. But kids are kids no matter where you go.”
Outside of teaching she and Gregg enjoy canoeing and the great outdoors.
