It is his first full time teaching job and so far everything is adding up great for Joel Banbury.
Teaching grade 11 biology, grade 11 math, grades 9 and 10 science and grade 12 biology has him busy his first teaching year at RRHS.
Banbury spent four years at Western University in London, Ont. studying Physical Education. He did not know exactly what he wanted to do when he went to university, but with his mom being a teacher and his brother a professor, teaching seemed like a good direction to take.
This Hawkstone (near Barrie), Ontario native said his hometown is about the size of Rainy River. He found RRHS’ need for a teacher on the internet and applied for the job. At first he was not sure what to expect. “It just blew my mind that everyone is so trusting. No one puts locks on their lockers.”
Banbury’s love for sports has taken him to the coaches bench. He is leading the senior boys volleyball team this season and really enjoying it.
He said that the students and staff have been great so far and he is looking forward to the rest of the year.
Outside of school he enjoys hockey, baseball, curling and would love to go fishing!
