Jennelle Lowes of Rainy River is finally getting to do what she has really wanted to do; teach in Rainy River.
For the past five years she has taught in Big Grassy, Warroad and Baudette schools. So when the opportunity to teach at home came up she pounced on it!
She is teaching some very unique courses at Rainy River High School which excited her with the challenge that they present. This semester she is teaching Parenting, which goes from the decision to have a baby, through to raising kids. She has a more than full capacity group of grade 12 students. 27 of them, both genders, are taking the course and Jennelle said so far they are really enjoying it.
Next semester she will be teaching Native Studies, General Learning Skills and Managing Personal Resources.
She said she really has been excited about the school year because, “I knew what I would be teaching is really down to Earth.”
Lowes took her education at St. Cloud and Bemidji State Universities. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree and has her Jr. Primary, Special Education parts 1 and 2; and Reading Specialist parts 1 and 2. She also has her Masters Degree in Special Education. She admits that is her passion, but loves new challenges.
Having taught primary grades prior to this job, high school is everything she expected. “The students are very responsible and have a good level of maturity.” She is enjoying the experience, but does admit she misses the little kids to.
Outside of work she is kept busy with her two children and husband Darren who owns and operates Lowes Lumber in Sleeman.
