It was a warm night but that did not deter people from packing the Rainy River High School gym last Wednesday to celebrate graduation of the class of 2009.
There were 29 regular graduates and three alternative ed. students that received diplomas that evening.
Principal Jim Chorney offered the graduates, one of which is his son, words of encouragement. “Embrace the positive and ignore the negative.” He encouraged them to enjoy what they have in the now for one never knows when it may be gone. “Say something nice to someone every day.”
He also encouraged them to be trail blazers and wished them best of luck.
School Council President Peggy Advent started her remarks with praise and thanks for all who helped make the updated courtyard at the school possible. She then turned her attention to the grads, one of which is her daughter. “Congratulations and always try to keep your cup half full.”
Deputy Mayor of Rainy River, Brent Anderson, who also had a daughter graduating, congratulated them on behalf of the town.
Many awards were then presented (see list elsewhere in this paper).
After the presentation of diplomas and the class of 2009, two class videos were shown to the audience.
The class valedictorian was Nicky Dorrie who spoke about the journey they made together and how the representation of being one group is portrayed by all wearing the same gowns. Then they remove them and are seen as individuals... graduating from one stage of life.
After the ceremony grads gathered in the newly renovated courtyard for photos and later visited in the school with parents and friends.
