Clarifying Fees
Dear Editor:
I’m writing to clarify the rationale behind the fee structure of Rainy River‘s “Huff and Puff” Program. When Riverside Corporation was originally approached regarding this program (in 2004), it was requested by their administration that in return for free use of this space its employees could access the facility without charge. It is my judgement that this stipulation
is fair and reasonable. The end result is lower user fees, as “Huff and Puff” is not paying rent or utilities. We are also not paying installation charges for a water dispenser, air conditioner or electrical services for the treadmills.
The Town’s insurance company, in order to provide liability insurance, requires daily inspection of the equipment. Clinic staff have agreed to do these inspections. They have also agreed to assume the ongoing tasks of collecting fees and managing the books. Again, it is my view that compensation in the form of free membership is fair in view of these added responsibilities. The arrangement benefits everyone, as it would be difficult to run the program without the goodwill and assistance of these people.
Three local organizations, the Rainy River Ladies Auxiliary, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, raised and donated approximately $30,000 of the $50,000 budget used to purchase the equipment. The ongoing costs of maintenance, repairs, replacement,
supplies and weekly cleaning are covered by the user fees.
At the end of each fiscal year it is my intention to divide any surplus from the user fees amongst these organizations in proportion to the size of their original contribution.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns regarding this issue, or any other that arises from the operation of “Huff and Puff”.
Sincerely,
Dr. David Singleton
