Review of all hydro bills called for by municipalities

Ken Johnston

Toronto, November 25, 2002 – 4:30 p.m. In response to the introduction of the Electricity Pricing, Conservation and Supply Act, 2002, AMO believes that the Bill and related regulations must undergo a complete legislative review process, so the public and stakeholders have the opportunity to fully scrutinize the legislation and provide advice to ensure that the interests of consumers, taxpayers and investors can be protected.
Throughout the entire restructuring process, municipalities have always followed the ever-changing rules laid out by the Province and the OEB. However, the integrity of municipalities and their municipal electrical utilities is now being questioned by the government.
“The government needs to get it right this time,” said Ken Boshcoff, AMO President.” The electricity system is too important to Ontario’s economy and the taxpayers of this Province to create any more uncertainty and difficulties”.
At a press conference earlier, AMO, the Large Urban Mayors of Ontario and their electrical utilities again extended an offer to assist the government in the development of the legislation and any future regulations under it.
President Boshcoff added “We need the time, and the commitment of the government to work with us, we can limit the impact of these proposals and eliminate any unintended consequences which often results when legislation is pushed through the House without public input.”
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is a non-profit organization with member municipalities representing 98 per cent of Ontario’s population. AMO supports and enhances strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political system.
