Fun for everyone in 2001 - Railroad Daze steams into Rainy River Friday

All aboard for Railroad Daze Fun this weekend, July 20-22, 2001.
The 14th Annual Rainy River Railroad Daze Festival is set to steam into town with a jam packed schedule of fun for everyone in 2001!

Friday
Starting on Friday local businesses will hold sidewalk sales all day with bargains galore!
The Rainy River Public Library will also being holding their annual Big Book Sale starting Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The post office staff will also be holding a customer appreciation day on Friday during normal business hours.
After lunch live entertainment will held in the club room at the Rainy River Legion. A live band will play both in the afternoon and into the evening. The Legion will also host the annual Rainy River Curling Club’s Fish Fry, an annual event that always is met with strong support, so come early!
The Rainy River Recreation Board’s annual slo-pitch tournament also begins at 5 p.m. Word is that there are already a ton of teams gearing up to provide for some great spectator sport!
The Rainy River Recreation Board will be hosting the first of its two big dances Friday night at 9 p.m. Pandor Productions of Toronto will be putting on a video dance party with a Hawaiian theme for the night. Plenty of prizes will be awarded for things like a limbo contest throughout the night. A disco dance floor with lights under it will be featured both nights. The dances are 16 & over and there is a $8 cover charge.

Saturday
Saturday is so packed with activities that it will keep people moving all day!
The day starts with a pancake breakfast at the Rec. Centre at 9 a.m. It is being run by the Rainy River Figure Skating Club.
Slo-pitch action will continue bright and early at 8 a.m. and continue all day.
Sidewalk sales will continue at local businesses and Main Street will be closed for most of the day to allow several street activities to take place.
At 10 a.m. a 3 on 3 basketball tournament sponsored by KGB Sports will be held on Main St. Prizes will be awarded and there is no cost to register. Call 852-4446 by Friday to register.
At Noon, the highlight for so many people every year, will take place. The Annual Railroad Daze parade will line up at on the old highway and run down 6th St. to Mill Avenue. It will head east to Main St. and then up to the old station.
From Noon to 2 p.m. the Catholic Women’s League will hold their very popular annual luncheon in the Catholic Church basement.
The Toy Library on Main St. will be a hub of kids fun from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. when they offer children’s face painting and activities.
At 1 p.m. there will be a stock dog demonstration at the Rainy River Rec. Board Ball Diamond area.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Canadian National Railway will be hosting a diesel locomotive for the public to tour as well as a booth on Operation Lifesaver at the 4008 engine. That is a program to promote railroad safety to the public.
There will be a dunk tank on Main St. from 1-4 p.m. to raise money for the local women’s hockey team.
From 2-4 p.m. there will be two screens of entertainment for the kids. On one there will be a kids dance and the other will have a giant screen for
kids to play PlayStation games on. These events are sponsored by the Rec. Board and will be in the RR Arena.
2 p.m. will see some twisting going on as Allan Hartnell hosts another great arm wrestling competition in the upstairs of the recreation centre.
If you’ve worked up a hunger by the end of the day, the RR Legion will have the answer for you. However you better get there early as the annual Steak Fry there usually sells out.
At 9 p.m. the Recreation Board will host another big dance. This time the theme will be retro disco and again Pandor Productions of Toronto will be playing groovy music and handing out plenty of prizes. It too is 16 & over and has a cover charge.

Sunday
Sunday morning there will be pancake breakfasts at both the Legion and the Recreation Centre. The latter being hosted by the Lions and the first by the Legion.
At 10:30 a.m. there will be a non-denominational church service at Hannam Park.
From Noon to 1 p.m. there will be a potluck picnic in the park.
At 1 p.m. there will be a Petting Zoo at the RR Arena sponsored by the RR Legion.
From 2-4 p.m. the weekend will wrap up with kids activities in the park.
Everyone is encouraged to “Track on Down” to Rainy River for this weekend of fun for everyone in 2001!
