September Long Weekend Calls for Service

(Fort Frances, ON) - Rainy River District OPP was steady for calls for service over the September Labour Day weekend. Officers responded to five motor vehicle collisions, with one collision resulting in serious but non life threatening injuries. In addition to scheduled patrols, an additional eight officers conducted RIDE Programs and the Marine Unit was patrolling Rainy Lake. Officers charged 23 drivers with speeding offences, 2 drivers were charged with seatbelt offences, 1 driver was issued an offence of driving while under suspension, and officers issued 3 moving violation charges, 1 liquor licence offence and two marine related charges.
Impaired Driver Charged
On September 6th, 2009 at approximately 3:15 pm, officers stopped a vehicle for erratic driving. The driver, Bruce Wayne DEROUARD, age 36 years, of Kenora was arrested and charged with Impaired Driving and Over 80 mg contrary to the Criminal Code. The vehicle was seized and towed. Following the completion of the investigation, DEROUARD was released from custody by way of a Promise to Appear. He is scheduled to attend Fort Frances Court on October 19, 2009.
Mischief and Theft
Police were called to investigate several mischief and theft occurrence. In the Town of Fort Frances the following incidents took place:
On September 5 on the 500 block of Victoria Avenue, culprits damaged a vehicle tail light and then stole the vehicle’s gas cap
On September 5 at the 1000 block of Third Street East, an officer investigated a theft of a green Sears push lawn mower
On September 6 at the 1000 block of Scott Street, culprits damaged a side mirror of a pick up truck
The following incidents took place rurally:
On September 4, at the Riverview Park in Barwick, culprits kicked over a park bench and uprooted flowers and trees.
On September 5, in the Pinewood area, culprits stole five small five gallon gas cans from a residence.
Police have noticed an increase in the number of mischief and theft occurrence over the past month. Residences are reminded to lock up their valuables and report any suspicious activity or person(s) to police.
