RIET (MARIA CORNELIA JOHANNA) CARNAHAN-VAN DER WIGNGAARD
After a courageous battle with Cancer Riet Carnahan passed away at the Emo Hospital surrounded by family Thursday, July 19, 2001
Riet was born in Leiden, The Netherlands on August 26th 1931.
She was married to Dick Carnahan, who predeceased her in 1991.
She leaves behind her close family in The Netherlands. Her brothers Piet and Carel and her sisters Bep, Corrie, Carla, Joke and Alma, sister in law and brothers in law, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
In 1985 Dick and Riet moved to Stratton to take care of Dick’s mother and it became their permanent home.
Riet worked as an R.N. at the Rainy River Hospital for 3 years.
After her retirement she became a volunteer worker and was very active with the Senior Friendship Club, started an exercise group 3 times a week which is still going strong. She has also been teaching Line Dancing to Seniors and in schools in the District for special projects. She was an active member of the Handy Van and Home Support Committee in Emo. She was a member of the Manor Board and Stratton United Church Board.
Last year she was recognized for her Volunteer work and received a 5 year pin from the Ontario Government. She was a volunteer for the Palliative Care Service which was started in 1999.
Riet loved to travel and visit her family in Holland and her friends in England and Scotland and South Africa. Nina from South Africa was her penfriend and they met for the first time in 1996 after they had been writing to each other for 50 years. Keeping in touch with her family and friends was her greatest joy.
A memorial Service was held at the Stratton United Church Tuesday, July 24 to celebrate her life. Barb Miller officiated.
