RRDSB

This year, School Bus Safety Week was held from October 19 to 23. The Transportation Department conducted its second annual poster contest as a way to promote school bus safety among students, and last week awards were presented to students for their winning entries. This year’s theme, Be Visible, emphasized that students should always stay in the school bus driver’s view when they cross the street, and when they board and exit the bus.
The criteria for selecting the winners was based on the relationship of the poster design to the school bus safety practices, the originality of the poster, the artwork and its execution, and the overall visual impact of the poster. All elementary schools and grades were encouraged to participate in the contest, and winners were selected from each of the following divisions: Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2, Grade 3 to Grade 5, and Grade 6 to Grade 8.
Both winners of the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2 division attend Grade 1 at Crossroads School. Joanna Empey was the first place winner, and second place was presented to Ashton Cousineau.
In the Grade 3 to Grade 5 division, first place was awarded to J. W. Walker School Grade 3 student, Hailee Barnard, and second place was awarded to St. Michael’s School Grade 3 student, Callahan Wiedenhoeft.
Winners of the Grade 6 to Grade 8 division were both Sturgeon Creek School students. Grade 7 student, Larissa McKelvie was presented with first place, and Grade 6 student, Ashley Croswell was presented with second place.
Rainy River District School Board Transportation Officer, Donna Lee said, “Students across the district participated in this year’s contest and learned the importance of school bus safety rules as they worked on their posters. We were elated to have over 100 thought-provoking and creative posters submitted by students.”
