Plenty of fun planned for Family Day in RR

For the third year in a row the will be plenty of fun to be had next Monday in Rainy River!
The Third Annual Rainy River Family Fun Day is being held at the Recreation Centre with activities also being held in neighbouring buildings.
Recreation Director Meghan Shanks sent flyers home with local school kids about three weeks ago to preregister families for the activities. The deadline to do so was extended from last Friday to yesterday. Organizers, which include the Rec. Board, Best Start Hub and the Rainy River Curling Club will then determine what activities will take place.
This year they have decided to break the fun into two age groups. A younger group, 10 and under and an older group 11 and over will participate in the various activities. Organizers hope that this will attract not only the younger kids but the older ones as well this year.
“We had them preregister this year so that we could plan out the activities better,” said Shanks on Monday.
Each flyer gave each group four activities to prioritize. For the 10 and under they had Curling, Jump Rope activities, Sliding/Tobogganing and Family Craft to rate from 1-4 with 1 being the activity that mosts interests them. For the 11 and over they had Curling, Snowshoeing, Pond Soccer and Dodge Ball to rate.
Depending on numbers, organizers will decide if all or some of the activities will run.
The schedule for the day is as follows:
9 a.m. registration for the Shiver on the River 5K run/walk at the Rec. Centre.
10 a.m. Shiver on the River 5K run/walk
Noon Welcome and overview of the day.

For those who pre-registered for the Family Fun Day, there was a $2 charge. Shanks said there will be some spots open for people who want to come on the day itself, but they will have to pay $4 and will be assigned activities; not allowed to choose.
The Family Relay, which was heralded last year as being extremely fun, involves family teams to do seven different activities to complete it. Families can partner to compete in it if they do not have enough numbers.
