O.P.P. place first cell phone charge

Officers of the Rainy River District OPP would like to remind drivers that as of February 1, 2010 it is illegal in Ontario for drivers to use ANY hand held communications and entertainment devices while operating their vehicles.
Since the introduction of this law in October 2009, the focus was on educating drivers about the new legislation. Officers are observing that the number of people using their hand held cellular phones has decreased but we are concerned about the large number of drivers who continue to engage in this dangerous activity.
On April 16, 2010 the Rainy River District Traffic Unit was conducting routine patrols and located a driver using a hand held cellular phone. The driver was charged and issued a fine of $155.
The OPP wants to remind drivers that the legislation regulates the use of hand held devices such as cell phones. A cell phone and similar devices may only be used as a hands free device.
The OPP is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone using the roadways in Ontario. Keep your hands on the wheel and your attention on the road.
