The Northwestern Health Unit has placed Rainy River and Emo Beaches under a swimming advisory as of July 8, 2010, due to high bacterial counts found during routine beach sampling.
Water quality tests of the beach yielded higher than acceptable E. coli, bacterial levels. High E. coli levels pose a possible risk to bathers, including a variety of skin, eye, nose and throat infections, and gastrointestinal illness.
Warning signs regarding the hazards of swimming at the Rainy River and Emo Beaches are being posted by representatives of the Northwestern Health Unit. The beaches will remain posted until satisfactory results are obtained.
Local beaches are tested regularly from early June until the end of August.
