After receiving countless calls from people all over Canada and some in the US who would like to learn how to make candy Erin’s Candy has decided to open a new division that will help them do just that. Erin’s Candy Consultant’s will be trained by business owner Erin Rencher.

11th Giant Pumpkin fest weighs in this weekend

It will be a gigantic day of fun in Rainy River this Saturday as the 11th annual Rainy River Valley Giant Pumpkin Festival will be weighing in.
The festival will see one big change this year when it moves to a new venue. For the past decade it was primarily held at the waterfront in Rainy River. This year it will be moved to the Rainy River arena.

Council looks at downsizing itself

Rainy River town council took its first steps towards reducing the size of government here.
At the September meeting this past Monday evening, councillor Ed Tymkin gave the bylaw, to reduce council from seven to five members (including the mayor), first reading.

70 percent of farmland will change hands

Demographics suggest as much as 70 percent of all farmland in North ‘America will be transferred in the next decade. In Canada alone, studies have found that 120,000 farmers will reach retirement age and $50 billion of farm capital will be transferred. However, about 90 per cent of farms have no documented succession plan, or do not have one that is viable.

As far as I know, this is the only ground squirrel we have in Northern Ontario (not counting the Woodchuck). And again to the best of my knowledge, it is found only in the Rainy River District.

The Lakehead University Voyageurs retraced the historic route travelled by voyageurs a few hundred years ago as part of the exploration and eventual fur trade.
