Many of us have never been to battle; never seen a comrade fall; never had to make a series of life or death decisions – all in the blink of an eye. In fact, to the majority of the population, the concept of fighting for our freedom or the freedom of others is as surreal as those battlefields in the movies.

My uncle Ron posted a picture of Private Ronard Kleven of the 78th Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers taken on November 1918 on Facebook this past week. Ronard was my mother’s father. My grandfather James Alexander whose family had immigrated to Canada at the turn of the 20th Century was a medic in the Great War.
It was my uncle’s way of remembering his father’s commitment to his new country Canada.

Our neighbours to the west (Manitoba) have it right.
Remembrance Day should be a holiday for all citizens.

If the Prime Minister was hoping that his prorogation and subsequent 17 week summer break would put the Senate scandal on the back burner when parliament returned he was spectacularly wrong.
