Paving the way for walking

The town crew and the Pioneer Paving company were busy last Tuesday, paving the walking path that runs through Hannam Park, it joins with the trail from First Street to Riverview School, which was paved in the 1st phase last year.

Proper potato planting techniques

Over the years, I have heard many stories on the best way to plant potatoes. I am sure that most of these methods worked, some by pure luck but some were the proper way to plant potatoes. This column will provide you with an outline of what conditions a potato needs to thrive and produce a large crop, a few steadfast rules and a few proven suggestions on how to plant your seed potatoes.

Farm noises responsible for hearing loss

If you have a dull, ringing sensation in your ears after a long day on the tractor, it’s an indication that you have exceeded a sound level that can be comfortably tolerated. It could also be the first sign of hearing loss.
This ringing is typically accompanied by a slight loss of hearing. While overnight rest will generally restore normal hearing, repeated, prolonged exposure to noise of this intensity will likely result in a permanent hearing loss.

Graduation Day: Making the next steps easier

Over the next few weeks many students from across the region will celebrate their graduation.

The Fairy Ring Mushrooms

Have you ever seen a ring of smallish mushrooms on your lawn, or in a pasture field? Well, if you have, and you are aware of the folklore associated with these mushrooms, then you will know that this is the Fairy Ring.
The most common of the stories about the Fairy Ring was that this was where the fairies danced. They danced at night, but only on certain nights. They had to be moonlit, but misty. When the fairies tripped the light fantastic, they always moved in circles - hence the ring.

Safety first: at home and in the work place

At the Fort Frances Times, Tanya Cumming attends to everyone safety. She is constantly reminding everyone about health and safety rules. It often includes information about nutrition, diet, exercise and working with computers to reduce the risk of injury.
I like to think that our workplace is a very safe place to work.
I think most businesses are constantly stressing the importance of working in a safe manner. Often that safe manner requires a few extra minutes to put guards in place, or finding the appropriate stepladder to change a simple light bulb.

A lot of competition for space each week!

Last week I played catch up in the paper.
The week before I had so much copy and so little space that it was very frustrating to let so many people down.

Let's go to Summer Camp!

Camping season is fast approaching and the committee for the United Church Camp at Sunny Cove is busy preparing for another great week of camping from July 3 - 6. This camp is open to children ages 8 - 14 (or going into Grade 3 in September 2012).

Extraordinary Musicians

On Wednesday, April 26, Our Lady of the Way students in Grades 1 - 3 attended the Music Festival and placed First in their division with an overall score of 87. Back Row: Avery Kreger, Hannah McDermid, Jevonte Phillips, Angel Medicine, Kirsten Armstrong, Jaden Medicine, Front Row: Marcus Medicine, Joaquin Medicine, Paige Asselin, Keira Govier, Hailey Copenace and Sarah McDermid. For their participation, the students received the St. Patrick's CWL Judaeo Christian Award.
