One good turn … will take the whole blanket

This week has been another chilly one across Northwestern Ontario which makes it as good a time as any to look ahead and think of the warm summer months that are just around the corner. In the past few days my office has received the 2011 guidelines for the Canada Summer Jobs Program, so I’d like to share a bit of information about the program and the application process for any employers who may wish to gain access to the program funding this year.

When I was 11 years old, I started delivering papers along First Street. My brother and I started in the middle of January. We both went to Robert Moore School. School days did not end until 4:00 p.m. then and all the carriers would run and walk to the Times which was then located on Church St. where the Border Services facility now stands. It was almost a mile to pick up our papers. So too was the distance the kids in the west end travelled.
It was much later that the Times began dropping off papers throughout the town for its carriers.

It is times like the past couple of weeks and especially this past Saturday that make me the most proud to be from Rainy River.

Peacefully on Friday, January 14, 2011, at La Verendrye Hospital. Fort Frances, Ont, Joseph Ronald Milliard of Rainy River, Ont passed away at the age of 80.

John T. Boretski, age 84 of Baudette, MN passed away on January 11, 2011 at the LakeWood Health Center.

Peacefully on January 15, 2011 at the Rainy River Health Center, Rainy River, Ont, with his family by his side, Rosario Rene of Pinewood, Ont, passed away at the age of 96.
