No need for attack ads in politics
Every journalist loves elections!
It is a time when our freedoms are truly trumpeted as we all have a say in who will make decisions over the next four years.
But as I grow older, I am increasingly finding myself disparaged by a certain part of elections... the attack advertisements.
On Monday I could not believe how many ads ran on U.S. radio and television attacking candidates. It was as if there were no announcers working at the radio stations Monday... or no need for regular programming on either radio or t.v.
I am not sure if the attack ads run in the major newspapers in the U.S. as I have not had the opportunity to read one lately.
The same scenario has played out in provincial and federal politics in Canada over the past several elections as well.
Attack. Attack. Attack.
It makes me wonder how people decide to vote? What are the people running for office actually doing for us?
I am thankful that for the most part in our local government elections the mud slinging has virtually been nil on my watch. Candidates are sincere with 99% of them running for all the right reasons... the betterment of our communities.
The provincial/state and federal candidates should learn a lesson from local politicians and instead of being so juvenile, grow up, state what they hope to accomplish, stand on their own record and let us decide who is best for the job.
