Why we have deadlines

Deadlines... everyone hates them, and most people try to extend them.
Every week we face this dilemma. People calling at the last minute trying to get things into the paper. Some call late Friday, some early Monday and some late Monday. The calls I find most frustrating are the ones that come Tuesday morning, thinking they can still get something into the paper.
The deadlines for the paper are as follows:
•News/copy: 12 noon on Friday.
•Display advertising: 12 noon on Friday.
•Classified advertising: 3 p.m. on Friday.
There is a reason for these deadlines and that is the fact that it takes a great deal of time to get things organized, typed into computers and finalized for production.
On Monday we spend the entire day writing stories, creating ads, editing photographs and then laying out the pages that you get to read every week.
It is a daunting task every week and sometimes I wonder how we manage to get the paper out on time.
Every Tuesday morning, usually before the sun comes up, the paper is taken to Fort Frances to be printed. It is often back in town by 10 a.m. and on local newsstands before lunch.
We ask that people respect these deadlines so that we can give you a paper to read every week at the same time.
–Until then,
Ken
