The Rainy River High School Owls Senior Girls Basketball team had a stellar season, making it all the way to the All Ontarios last week.
However, they faced some very stiff competition when they reached this pinnacle. In their first game, Thursday morning, they played Rideau and were held to just 11 points after three quarters. They did bounce back in the fourth with 13 points but it was not enough to catch Rideau who beat them 43-24. RRHS’ Skyler Arpin lead the scoring for the Owls with 8 pts.
Later that day they faced Jean Vanier, the team that would eventually go on to win the All Ontario Championship. RRHS scored 4 pts. in the first quarter and only 8 more in the second. By the end of the first half Vanier was up 43-12. Vanier then held the Owls scoreless in the last two quarters while they tacked on another 25 pts. to beat RRHS 68-12. Shauna Moen lead scoring for RRHS with 4 pts.
Two losses meant the Owls were now in the Consolation quarter-finals, but were eliminated by King’s Christian 57-32. RRHS did score points in every quarter of this game with Skyler Arpin again leading the scoring with 14 pts.
This caps off the RRHS first sports season of 2012-13. Both Jr. and Sr. Girls basketball teams won NORWOSSAs and the Sr. team then won NWOSSAs and a berth to the All Ontarios.
The second court sports season begins today with an away trip to Red Lake with the boys now playing basketball and the girls volleyball.
The teams first home games will be next Monday, Dec. 3rd, when the Owls host Atikokan.
