By Ken Johnston
It is as sure sign that Christmas is just around the corner. It is Rainy River Christmas Extravaganza time!
The annual event takes place this year on Saturday, Dec. 8th and begins at Noon and runs well into the evening with something for all ages!
At Noon pictures with Santa will take place upstairs in the Rec. Centre. Several vendors will also be on hand at the Rec. Centre, selling everything from Christmas baking to great gifts for family members!
A 1 p.m. there will be free hotdogs and hot cocoa for all kids under 18. The canteen will be open as well.
At 1:30 p.m. several family activities will begin. They include free skating, sliding, cookie decorating, hay rides and other Christmas activities.
At 4:30 p.m. there will be visiting with Santa who has some goodies for every kid who visits with him.
Mayor Debbie Ewald will officially kick off the Christmas season by lighting the Town tree next to Gillons Insurance at 5:45 p.m.
Fifteen minutes later the annual Parade of Lights will take place beginning at the bottom of Main St. and going north to Rainy River Hardware. It will then turn east and finish at the Rec. Centre. Three youngsters, Teira Forester, Brinnell Hagarty and Olivia Kreger will be riding with Santa on his float! They won the annual colouring contest to win a spot on the float!
There are several floats already registered for the parade and a few that have told Rec. Directore Kam Kuzyk they are working on it. There are cash prizes for the top entries in the parade!
After the parade the community is invited to the Catholic Church where the Rainy River Community Choir will be holding its first of two Christmas Concerts. They will be performing Religious Songs of the Season and leading the audience in Christmas Carols as well. If you can not make that concert they will again perform on Sunday at the Bergland Lutheran Church at 2 p.m.
