It is illegal to drink in your ice-fishing hut

News Release
OPP

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the public of the law relating to consuming alcohol while in “Ice Shacks” fishing on area lakes. Consuming alcohol in an ice hut is illegal under Regulation 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA). The only exemption is if the ice hut contains legitimate sleeping and cooking facilities (i.e. ice bungalows) per the definition of “Public Place” in the LLA.
Public safety is the top priority relating to this issue and as such, OPP officers will be out on patrol ensuring that these activities are in fact keeping safety in mind. The OPP enforces this legislation recognizing that 30-percent of all Motorized Snow Vehicle fatalities involve the consuming of alcohol.
The clear message that we want to ensure everyone is aware of is this; the legal position of consuming alcohol inside of an ice shack is an offence, the ice shack is not a private place / dwelling under the act and public safety trumps all.
Stay safe; think safe so you always be safe.
