District youth choir to be formed
Registration for a new “Youth Choir” will be taking place Wednesday (Aug. 21), and at a cost of only $10 for the year, it’s a great opportunity.
“It’s something that I had been wanting to start up in the area for a while,” said director Christina Campagna, who will be running the choir with the assistance of Heather Latter.
“Heather approached me at the beginning of summer to start it. She thought, ‘This would be a great idea,’” she added.
Together they have spent the summer planning how the choir’s upcoming year will look. It will begin on Oct. 9 and run until May.
“The plan is that we will be having weekly rehearsals, once a week on Wednesday evenings at the Zion Lutheran Church,” said Campagna.
The rehearsals will be an hour long, running from 6-7 p.m.
It is open to boys and girls ages eight-14.
“The plan is to start out with some music that the choir members would be more familiar with, for example more popular songs, just to get things rolling,” said Campagna.
After that, the choir will begin working on a Christmas repertoire for the rapidly approaching holiday season.
The directors are looking at putting on a Christmas concert at Rainycrest Long Term Care, carolling around town, and possibly putting on another concert for the general public in December.
“The rest of year, we will be focusing on doing the festival—that’s the main showcasing for the choir,” said Campagna.
“Also, we’ll probably end up doing a year-end concert with a collection of songs we’ve worked on,” she added.
“I’m very excited about this—I hope that a lot of kids show up for it,” Campagna said about registration.
Registration will take place next Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church (1105 Scott St.) from 6-8 p.m.
“It’s a great outlet for these young singers; there’s really nothing other than the festival for them,” said Campagna.
“That was one of the main reasons for wanting to start this up.
“You don’t have to be taking vocal lessons, you don’t have to be able to read music—if you love singing, come,” she encouraged.
Some people have expressed interest in signing their children up already, which is great because the directors are hoping for at least a dozen youth to participate so that they can have sections.
There is no limit on how many people can sign up; and people who miss the initial registration will still be able to do so at a later date.
