The Rainy River Rec. Centre and Rainy River Public Library held our most recent birding event, as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (G.B.B.C.) Feb.14-17th. The GBBC is an annual event, aswell as a global event, where birders from across the globe submit their birding observations to the Ebird system (birding database), which can be found on www.birdcount.org. We had 11 birders participate in the count from ages 8-70, recording 334 total birds and 22 species. Species are as follows...

American Crow-15
American Gold Finch-26
Black Capped Chickadee-36
Black Billed Magpie-6
Blue Jays-29
Common Grackle-1
Common Goldeneye-22
Common Raven-12
Downy Woodpecker-3
Eagle(sp)-1
European Starling-25
Great Gray Owl-2
Hairy Woodpecker-9
House Sparrow-10
Northern Shrike-1
Pileated Woodpecker-1
Pine Grosbeak-33
Pine Sisken-8
Snow Bunting-54
Sharp Tailed Grouse-10
White Breasted Nuthatch-10
Rock Pigeon-20

One special sighting was that of a Common Grackle, which are rarely seen at this time of year.
I was especially proud of my nephew Ronan Ivall who counted the birds in his yard and recorded all of his information without any adult help. Thanks to all that participated in the count, you made it a great success. We will be doing another bird count for the middle of March, so please keep an eye out for our information.
